How magic works
Four ideas carry the whole system. Learn them and everything else is detail.
1 · You must learn it
No one starts with magic. Every spell is taught by a Scroll — read one to learn the spell, and it's inscribed into your spellbook forever. Scrolls are found in dungeons, sold by traders, won from quests, and traded between players. A spell you know is a spell you earned.
2 · You cast with a focus
Knowing a spell isn't enough — you must hold the right focus to cast it: a Wand for spells you aim outward, a Tome for spells you work on yourself or the space around you, or a Relic for the rare arts of travel and time.
3 · Everything costs
Every casting spends mana — the essence of lapis lazuli, Minecraft's own magic stone. Attack spells also burn a material component (a snowball for frost, a coal for fire). The greatest magic demands Aether Essence, the server's rarest power.
4 · Power has tiers
Foci come in four grades, and a spell can only be cast from a focus of its grade or higher. You don't buy a tier — you craft a better focus from rarer materials, and upgrade it as you grow.
Your foci
A mage carries a kit and swaps it in hand. The rule is simple: wands are named for their element, tomes for their discipline, and both carry a grade.
🪄 Wands
Cast outward — bolts, blasts, and beams aimed at a target or a spot. Each wand is an element: a Fire Wand, a Storm Wand, a Frost Shard. Swap wands to change what you throw.
📖 Tomes
Cast on yourself or the area around you — wards, healing, buffs, and storms that fall from the sky. Each tome is a school of magic, and it visibly grows as you upgrade it: a Book becomes a Folio, then a Grimoire, then a Codex.
🧭 Relics
The special arts. A Compass sets waypoints and opens town portals; a Clock bends day, night, and time itself; a Totem can call the fallen back to their feet.
A focus's grade is set by what you build it from — a Fire Wand forged with Blaze Powder is a mightier thing than one whittled from a stick and a coal. Rarer materials, stronger magic.
The shape of magic
Every spell sits at the crossing of two things: the school that says how the magic works, and the type that says what it's made of.
Nine Schools — the method
How the magic is worked, regardless of its element:
- Conjuration — create matter from nothing
- Evocation — channel raw forces (the attack arts)
- Necromancy — command death and the dead
- Transmutation — transform matter and self
- Distortion — bend space and time
- Restoration — mend the living
- Abjuration — ward, protect, and restrain
- Divination — perceive and know
- Enchantment — influence mind and body
Ten Types — the substance
What the magic is made of, across three domains that don't interfere with one another:
- Elemental — Fire, Water, Ice, Electric, Earth, Wind, in equal balance
- Life — Holy and Death as two sides of one coin, with Nature the living middle
- Arcane — raw force, deflected by nothing but Arcane itself
What it costs
Magic is never free. Three things pay for it.
Mana
The essence of lapis lazuli — mine it, or conjure it. Mana regenerates, so it's the rate limiter on how much magic you sling. Refill it fast with a held lapis and the Recharge spell.
Components
Evocation trades like for like: a snowball for a frostbolt, a coal for a firebolt, copper for a shock. Cheap magic uses cheap reagents; stronger blasts eat rarer ones.
Aether Essence
The server's rarest power, banked over time. Spent on the things that shouldn't be casual — teleports, summoning, creating matter from nothing, and the highest arts.
